On Thursday 24 October (8.15pm) our guest speaker will be former England and Middlesex captain Mike Brearley.

Mike Brearley was an outstanding captain – a man-management expert with the ability to get the best out of his team mates; he had, as Rodney Hogg the Australian fast bowler put it: “a degree in people.” He retired from Test cricket in 1980 but dramatically returned to the side in 1981 after Ian Botham stood down from the captaincy following a pair at Lord’s, and with England 1-0 down in the Ashes. Brearley rapidly restored Botham’s confidence with bat and ball and, following victory from a seemingly impossible position at Headingley, led the team to a historic 3-1 series win.

In total Mike captained England 31 times between 1977 and 1981, he won 18 Tests, lost four and drew nine.

Since retiring from cricket Mike has had a career as a psychoanalyst and was President of the British Psychoanalytical Society from 2008-10, he has also served as President of MCC and has written widely on cricket.

We are delighted that sports reporter Pat Murphy will be making a welcome return to Norfolk to conduct the interview with Mike which will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
