Thursday 28 September – Dennis Amiss

On Thursday 28 September (7.30pm) our guest speaker will be former England and Warwickshire batter Dennis Amiss.

With 102 first-class hundreds, 50 England caps and a Test batting average of 46.30, Dennis Amiss MBE ranks among the greats of English cricket. Joining the Warwickshire playing staff as a 15 year-old in 1958, he retired as a player almost 30 years later in 1987 with a first-class batting average of 42.86.

Of his 11 Test hundreds, eight exceeded 150 including his 262 not out to save the second Test against the West Indies at Kingston, Jamaica in 1974, and his 203 – also against the West Indies – at The Oval in 1976. In that Oval match Michael Holding took 14 wickets in a West Indies attack completed by Andy Roberts, Wayne Daniel and Van Holder. Amiss is known for scoring the first ever century in ODI history, which was also his debut match.

After retiring as a player, Dennis served Warwickshire as Chairman of the Cricket Committee and then Chief Executive at Edgbaston from 1994 until 2006, he has also served as an England selector and as Vice-Chairman of the ECB.

Dennis’s biography – Not Out at the Close of Play – was published by The History Press in 2021.
