Thursday 27 March – Graham Gooch

On Thursday 27 March (7.30pm) our guest speaker will be former England and Essex captain Graham Gooch.

Graham Gooch is widely regarded as one of England’s greatest cricketers in a career spanning from 1973 to 1997.

As an opening batsman, Gooch amassed 8,900 runs in 118 Test matches for England at an average of 42.58, including 20 centuries. His most famous innings came in 1990 against India at Lord’s, where he scored 333 in the first innings and 123 in the second – a match aggregate of 456 runs which remains a world record.

Gooch captained England in 34 Test matches between 1988 and 1993. As captain, he led by example, with his batting average (58.72) being significantly higher than his overall average. For Essex, Gooch was equally prolific scoring 30,701 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 51.77, including 94 centuries.

After retiring, Gooch remained involved in cricket including a spell as an England selector (1996-1999) and working as England’s specialist batting coach (1998-2000 & 2012-2014).
